The market for electronic waste, or “e-waste,” recycling and reuse services totaled close to $6.8 billion in 2010, up nearly 10% over $6.2 billion in 2009, according to a recent market study by SBI Energy (New York, NY). SBI estimates that e-waste constitutes only 0.01% to 3% of the world’s solid waste stream but is attracting substantial attention because of the presence of toxic constituents in discarded electronic products and because this waste stream is increasing in volume faster than any other waste stream. Industry growth is expected to continue on its upward path over the next decade, with collection services alone more than tripling by 2020, the study found. In 2011, China and India are estimated to account for the largest market shares in terms of value, at approximately 24% and 22%, respectively.
