Taking note of the fact that the nation has become the world’s top emitter of greenhouse gases, the Chinese government plans to invest $400 billion U.S. over the next four years on measures to protect the environment, Wu Xiaoqing, vice minister of China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP), has disclosed. Addressing the World Low Carbon and Eco-economy Conference and Technical Exposition in Nanchang earlier this month, Minister WU said that the investment will result in growth in China’s environmental protection industry by a compound annual rate of 15 to 20%, generating an average annual output of 4.9 trillion yuan (about $770 billion U.S.). A survey by Chinese University Tshinghua has found that emissions of greenhouse gases in China increased by 33.6% from 2006 to 2010, but that the nation’s carbon intensity has fallen by 20.8%, owing to initiatives to improve energy efficiency and to increase reliance on renewable energy sources.
