The Army Corps of Engineers disbanded its Everglades Division this past summer, an indication that the money to continue the multi-year, multi-billion-dollar Everglades restoration may not be there to continue previous levels of construction activity, at least for the near term. The Corps has indicated that its move was triggered by expectations that state and federal money for the cleanup is likely to be scaled back by Florida Governor Rick Scott and by the U.S. Congress. “We are positioning ourselves to be in a good place three to five years from now,” Howard Gonzales, chief of the Army Corps’ ecosystem branch for Florida and the Caribbean, recently told Engineering News-Record. Gonzales stressed that the Corps has not diminished any of the support that it provides for the Everglades program. The projected costs for the project have most recently been estimated at more than $19 billion.
